Jim: Thanks for commenting. SherryBaby offers a great lesson for screenwriters, I think, on how to avoid schmaltz in your domestic drama. This is a very R-rated film in which Sherry is put in a rough place and forced to earn everything. There are no easy reconciliations or tidy resolutions at the 90 minute mark. That and Maggie Gyllenhaal's performance are what makes SherryBaby a very good film.

Mark: Collyer indicated that she wrote a first draft of SherryBaby in 1994, but even if she wrote it after she watched Clean, I think filmmakers can and should steal from every movie ever made. Thanks for visiting and for commenting!

Any thought that Colyer lifted this from "Clean", directed by Assayas and released two years earlier? Near-identical plotline starring the other Maggie: Maggie Cheung.

This is one of those I rented just because I thought I had to see it, not because I wanted to. Yet Gyllenhaal is so good, it made me a fan.

A very good film.
