I'm kind of on the more negative end with this film. There were scenes that worked, scenes that didn't. I agree that, for the most part, it's pretty balanced. It's possible that at 15 I would have loved it, but at 28, not so much. The resolution just really irritated me.
Also, I felt there were very obvious similarities w/Harold & Maude (and the other classics you mentioned, of course), but that film for me reaches much farther in what it's saying.

Christian: I guess this proves why romantic comedy is the most difficult genre to write. Everyone has their own "cute" threshold and I guess this flick crossed yours. You are not alone. Thanks for sharing your opinion.

Lauren: Elizabethtown is inferior to this film in just about every aspect I can think of. It isn't as funny. The tunes aren't as good. The casting doesn't work. Huge portions don't make sense, perhaps due to the massive editing job the movie underwent at the last minute. Finally, Zach Braff understood New Jersey a lot better than Cameron Crowe understood the South. So I guess we disagree. I dig your hyphenation though.

Never cared for this. Good soundtrack, way too forced quirky. Anything with people in knight outfits is pushing the quirk.

Nayana: Awesome. Thanks so much for sharing your love for Garden State with the rest of the class. What strikes me when I watch this again is how funny it is, so I feel it does hold up.

Fletch: I saw Shattered Glass but have forgotten all of it. I vaguely remember Saarsgard in Kinsey, but here he got a role that called for him to step into the limelight. He was flagrant, funny, threatening and sincere in a tremendous performance.

I fall pretty closely to Nayana. Not only did I love it in the theater, but I feel it holds up pretty well; after all, with the somewhat retro soundtrack (Paul Simon, Nick Drake, etc), it has somewhat of a timeless feel.

More than that, though, just as the characters were feeling, the movie felt like home to me. I'm not from Jersey or on any medication, but the interaction between Large and his friends/parents felt so true.

And I echo the love for Saarsgard - he's criminally underused and I sing his praises whenever possible. If you like him and haven't seen Shattered Glass, get on it.

I'm exactly the opposite of Daniel. This actually gets better every time I watch it. One of my all-time favorites.

Daniel: Agreement. Thanks for commenting. Even a Braff hater would have to admit that you don't see many filmmakers trying to make a movie about their experiences. We need more of these types of films and less ones about snowboarders and shit.

Chicken Lady: I still haven't watched Pretty In Pink. I saw all the ones John Hughes actually directed, I think that excuses me. Obviously we agree here because I'm the one who talked you into seeing this. Thanks for commenting!

Rachel: I can't argue that this movie had a lot of passionate viewer hype behind it. It's too bad that got in your way here. I see a day when we will join voices and both agree that a movie is good. Thanks for inspiring me to keep this dream going!

I didn't really care for it. I watched it about 3 years after it came out and felt it was vastly overhyped. It tried too hard to be quirky and cool. I'm not particularly opposed to Braff or Portman, but the movie stirred not a single emotion in me.

I, for one, LOVED it!! One of my all time favorite movies...it's very charm is the fact that it is quirky and somewhat all over the place. I mean come on, that's how life is after all, isn't it?? And I can attest to the instant kinship of the two characters...it happens is all I'm saying...it's right up there with Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink
