Anyone who grew up during this magic time in surfing history loves this movie. We thrill with each ride, remembering our own, and we compare the characters to the guys we knew who were just like them. For us, Milius just gets it. I thought William Katt gave a great performance as he transitioned from the one of the guys to a Vietnam vet.

The movie captures a place and time a lot of people remember with great fondness and incredible nostalgia.

Moviezzz: Watching a clip of the closing credits someone posted on Youtube, what struck me most was the outpouring of emotion displayed by the guys who wrote in on the movie's impact for them in the comments section. This is a pretty good DVD of a great film, but if you're a Milius fan, I highly recommend the commentary he does with Arnold Schwarzenegger for the Conan the Barbarian DVD.

Christian: Thanks for commenting. Iconic import. There was a lot of that going on in the '70s. Look at Two-Lane Blacktop. Those guys seemed to relate everything in life to their '55 Chevy. Plenty of people didn't like that movie either and I can understand why this one might seem silly. My disbelief was suitably suspended.

I totally get and respect what Milius is trying to do in this film, I've just never been able to buy into it. The end is so layered in iconic import that I can't help but laugh and think, "dude, you're surfers!"

Excellent review. A very underrated film.

I've been meaning to pick up the DVD of this. It has been on my "To Buy" list since it was first announced years ago.
