If your father missed the ending, you mean "Columbine", the head of "Topaz". This is Jacques Granville, played by Michel Piccoli, but "Columbine" is not a killer or assassin. He delegates some men, which turn off Henri Jarré from the window (a short time later the agent's daughter Claude Jade discovers Jarré's body by looking out from window; her husband Michel Subor has been shot "just a little"; and later when Michel Subor shows her a drawing of dead Jarré, his mother-in-law discovers, that Jacques Granville is the head of "Topaz")

Thanks to the longer version of 143 minutes (the 17 minutes footage including alternative endig of the duel at Stade Charléty) there are more scenes with Claude Jade as Devereaux' anxious and worried daughter Michèle Picard (for instance a longer scene of Michèle's arrival at La Guardia, André's arrival in Paris and the cocktail at Granville, when Michèle wants to reconcile her parents).
Claude Jade looks really like Grace Kelly's natural daughter.

Pat: My taste in movies can probably be summed up by the fact that I admire Topaz and loathe To Catch A Thief. What’s more, I’m pretty sure Hitchcock would agree with you and want to prescribe some type of medication for me.

Damian: I hadn't heard that Anthony Hopkins wanted to play Hitchcock. It sounds like they're doing this as a biopic, like Walk The Line. I don't know. Let's see if a director get attached. If the movie gets made, then we'll have a third actress behind Janet Leigh and Anne Heche to play Marion Crane. Maggie Gyllenhaal was the first actress to come to mind. And don't worry, man, I am resettitng my expectations to "zero" before I watch Psycho.

Well, I am glad you found a lot to like about Topaz, Joe. Like Pat, I just couldn't. I saw it a while ago but found myself thinking it was long, dull and just generally uninteresting and/or unengaging (although I do remember liking the camera angle that you pulled a screengrab from here: the one where the woman is shot crumbles to the floor).

You may be right in that hearing how bad it was for so long (from folks like myself) helped you to find the good things in it, whereas I was expecting far more from Hitch back when I first saw it. This sort of makes me nervous about the extent to which I've praised Psycho. Perhaps I've doen more harm than good in my praise of it, building up too much expectation by telling you that it's a great film before you've even had the chance to make that decision for yourself. I could see you possibly being really let down by it. But oh, dear God, I hope not.

Also, I don't know if you saw this story yet or not, but I think this could be a very good idea.

Most great directors have at least one stinker amongst the gems and for my money this is Hitch's. It's the only one of his films that I could never warm to -- and I have tried more than once.
