Black Mama, White Mama (1972)

Margaret Markov and Pam Grier play prisoners at a woman’s detention camp. Grier’s character “Lee Daniels” is in on a prostitution charge, while Markov’s “Karen Brent” is a blonde haired revolutionary of some sort (this American International Pictures’ drive-in feature was shot in The Philippines to save money, though the setting is referred to only as “the island” and politics are really the last thing the movie is bothered about.)

Lee refuses the sexual advances of the camp’s blonde matron (Lynn Borden) but when Karen accepts in order to get off work detail, the leading ladies get into a smackdown in the cafeteria. Put on a bus together, Karen’s revolutionary pals spring an ambush, but instead of letting themselves be rescued, the girls flee instead, chained together.

They disguise themselves as nuns, smack each other down while chained and at one point, dress a dog in their underwear to throw off the search party. They fight over whether to head for Karen’s pals in the mountains, or the coast, where Lee has access to a boat. Meanwhile, they’re hunted by a desperado named Ruben, played by the great Sid Haig.

Directed by Eddie Romero, from a script by H.R. Christian and screen story by Christian and future Academy Award winning filmmaker Jonathan Demme, the flick was originally known as Women In Chains. The title upgrade and Haig’s appearance as a cowboy gangster are really the only two redeeming features of the movie, which is – surprisingly – more boring than it is fun.

Cast seemingly with whoever they found driving down the road on location, the acting, dialogue and direction are all pretty woeful, even for a drive-in feature. Markov and Grier seem to have been cast based solely on their sensational profiles and how they would look on the poster. Other than beating up a pair of nuns off-screen, they are not given anything particularly memorable to do here.

Haig, much like he does in Coffy and Foxy Brown, flies in halfway through the movie, chewing up scenery and having a lot of fun before being dispatched violently. Sadly, he would share no screen time with Grier here.
